Central Florida averages 1–2 significant tropical weather events per year. While we're inland enough to avoid direct storm surge, we're very much exposed to wind, rain, and flooding. Here's your complete pre-season checklist.
Before Hurricane Season (May–June)
- Review and update your homeowner's and flood insurance policies
- Document your home's contents with photos/video stored in the cloud
- Know your insurance company's claims phone number — not just their main line
- Have your roof inspected — damaged roofs are the #1 cause of hurricane damage claims in Central FL
- Trim all trees and large branches near your home
- Clean gutters and downspouts
- Test your generator if you have one
- Stock 72+ hours of water and non-perishables
When a Storm is Approaching (24–48 Hours)
- Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, and loose items
- Close and secure all storm shutters or board windows
- Fill your car with gas
- Charge all phones and backup batteries
- Take photos of your home's exterior — proof of pre-storm condition
- Fill bathtubs with water (for flushing toilets if water service is interrupted)
After the Storm
- Don't go outside until the storm has fully passed — eye walls are deceptive
- Walk your property and document all damage with photos and video before touching anything
- Call Central Florida Disaster Recovery for emergency tarping and board-up if needed
- Contact your insurance company to open a claim
- Don't make permanent repairs until your adjuster has inspected — do only emergency protective measures
